 Community members are uniting in an effort to change the unwelcomed attitude of campers and other users of environmentally sensitive areas in the southern section of our region.  Community members are taking an active stance and will ensure that rubbish left behind is collected and disposed of appropriately.  In due time, this unacceptable occurrence will be reduced and eventually replaced with responsible behaviour and attitude.  Together, this despicable matter will be resolved.

 Congratulations to Hayden Smith representing Somerset Region SES Unit, for receiving the North Ipswich Rotary Police and Emergency Services SES Officer of the Year.

It has been reported that a new procurement agreement designed by the Australian Olympic Committee will provide Queensland companies with first preference of providing hundreds of services from torch design to the opening and closing ceremony fireworks.  Hundreds of Queensland businesses will be given the opportunity of building stadiums, roads and key resources for the 2032 Olympics as part of a “Queensland First” strategy to be ratified by the International Olympic Committee.

The Kilcoy community said farewell to a very respected and well-liked young man who was regarded as a bit of a comedian.  Coen gave up his time to volunteer with the Rural Fire Brigade and judged cattle at the Ekka.  As a big fan for sausages in bread with onions and barbecue sauce, along with Bushell’s tea, the dish was served to guests following Coen’s funeral.  A precious gift to his family, and who lived a full and varied life with a true work ethic at such an early age.

The Linville Heritage Festival was held over the weekend 20 – 22 November and congratulations must go to two community groups – Linville Progress Association and Toogoolawah and District History Group for working together to make available a unique and interesting event.  With solid vision and hard work, the community of Linville is clearly the winner.  I also acknowledge community members who got in and shared the workload.  Well done to everyone!

 It is with a heavy heart that I share the sad news of a 20 year old Mt Kilcoy resident who lost his life in a car accident on Monday morning 9^th November 2020.  The accident occurred on the D’Aguilar Highway between Kilcoy and the turn off to Harlin.  (My Father and the young lad’s Great Grandfather were great mates.)

I would encourage our residents to attend the Linville Heritage Festival to be held 20 -22 November 2020.  There is lots of information on the Linville Progress Assn.  Inc. Website.

Mortgage repayments are now cheaper than rents in many Brisbane suburbs, and it has been reported that those making the switch to home ownership are saving hundreds a month.  Kilcoy was mentioned as where buyers will see the greatest savings, around $470 per month cheaper than typical rent costs.  The report discloses the tendency is evident in all property types, however most common in units and houses in fringe locations where values are around $300,000 or lower.

Congratulations to Brisbane Valley Protein for receiving the Ipswich Region Food and Agribusiness Award presented at the City of Ipswich Business Excellence Awards.  Tough competition was provided by agribusinesses from across Ipswich, Scenic Rim, Lockyer and Somerset regions.

A very enjoyable day held at Victoria Park, Brisbane on Friday 30 October.  A day that provided important information sharing and a chance to network with new and returning South East Queensland Councillors.  Appreciation to Council of Mayors, South East Queensland for organising the event, I look forward to a future networking opportunity.

A great morning was held with around twenty volunteers releasing between 100,000 and 120,000 Bass fingerlings at The Spit, Lake Somerset and Lake Wivenhoe.  Many thanks to Garry Fitzgerald and his crew for an educational morning.

Along with my daughter and granddaughters, I attended the Curious Festival held at the Empire Theatre, Toowoomba on Saturday 17 October. This was a great family event with lots of entertainment, bubbles and fun. I appreciated the festival theme – “the future belongs to the curious”. Council has been fortunate with the recent collaboration with this establishment and the opportunity for our local youth who are interested in the arts to take part in the Empire Youth Theatre right here in Esk.

A local resident reported the story of the little tractor and trailer on route around our region. The driver and his offsider are fundraising for a charity. The gentleman is known as The Travelling Jackaroo and is collecting for and supporting Dolly’s Dream. He has been welcomed to the Dolly’s Dream fundraising team in an effort not only to raise funds, but also raise important awareness against bullying. The Travelling Jackaroo plans to complete a trip around Australia raising funds.

It may be reflective of the COVID times; however, a local real estate was number one rural selling agent in Australia for the month of October. Well done to the team.

A recent request I made on behalf of our residents and supported by the two Kilcoy schools for a continuation in an identified school bus service was rejected by DTMR. The department outlined the reasons why the request was denied and offered advice as to how to approach this matter in the future.

 I would like to remind community members of the forthcoming Arts Queensland funded arts initiative.  On Friday 23^rd October “Funny Mummies” a comedy showcase will be performed at the Somerset Civic Centre.  Empire Youth Theatre will be based at the Somerset Civic Centre for a six-week residency.  Flipside Circus will hold workshops in November.

Congratulations to the Lowood & Fernvale Community Bank Branch for another rewarding 2020 financial year.  A total of $33,561.00 was distributed throughout the Somerset region.  It has been acknowledged that this amount is representative of the cancellation of many community events due to COVID-19.  The branch has provided a massive 6% dividend on shareholder investments and over the ten years, invested $884,040 back into the Somerset region communities.

It is reassuring to learn that Kennedy Air has now positioned their Fire Boss firefighting aircraft to Watts Bridge, ready to support the QFES as required during the forthcoming summer fire season.

A very important topic was discussed at the Kilcoy Interagency Meeting, whereby the provision of a community venue and home to many of the visiting services was supported by various service providers.  This initiative would provide a safe and inviting space for our community members to meet with relevant services.

Congratulations to all newly elected office and zone committee members who have put their hands up for the forthcoming year of the Australian Local Government Women’s Association – Queensland Branch, at their Annual General Meeting.

Residents have expressed their concerns again with the mistreatment of our waterways and environment.  This concern particularly relates to Savages Crossing and Twin Bridges areas.

 Congratulations to Hyperfly Martial Arts Athlete Angus Corby for winning the 2020 Queensland State Championship and to Taylah Smith and her horse Lunation winning the Reserve Queensland Champion in the 21-26 years age group in the Pony Club Queensland State Show Jumping and Equitation Championships.

State Minister for Local Government, Minister for Racing and Minister for Multicultural Affairs The Honourable Stirling Hinchliffe announced that the Show Societies Grants Program provides financial support for operating costs associated with conducting annual agricultural shows, and costs towards the construction and maintenance of showground assets.  Congratulations to Esk P &I Assn – $8,925; Kilcoy PA&I Society – $8,719; Toogoolawah Dairying, Agriculture and Industrial Assn – $7,979 grants awarded.

The third round of Queensland’s highly- successful Country Racing Program is now open for applications.  Racing Minister Stirling Hinchliffe advised that the program funded as part of Palaszczuk Government’s four-year, $70.4 million Country Racing Support Package, which provides $2.6 million a year for non-TAB thoroughbred clubs to help with repairs and maintenance, along with asset replenishment and replacement.

We were extremely honoured to have three impressive guest speakers at the Brisbane Valley Kilcoy Landcare Group meeting; Dr. Sandra Tuszynska – soil microbiologist, Markus Kerkdijk – Soil Biology Lab Technician and Amanda Roughan – B.Agr. Science (Hons) Agri Consultant/Facilitator & Director of South East Country Vets.

The topic was soil health and the importance of collaboration between scientists, industry leaders and farmers.  Each guest speaker shared crucial information which is important for us all to understand since it is an issue which affects all of us on all levels.

I wish to sincerely thank Artists, Mr Jonathan Jones and Ms Tricia Wheatstone for providing their experience, knowledge and expertise so openly.  Mr Jones provided a very detailed presentation, to which I am very thankful for.

There has been many favourable comments made about the Kilcoy Refuse and Recycling Centre and the effort taken by staff member Mr Barry Cobbin in providing an array of colour through interesting potted plants.  Well done Barry!

 Australia Post was reported as having recorded its busiest delivery day on September 1.  It is reported that more than 2.5 million parcels and letters were dropped off nationwide.  The service is experiencing a struggle to keep up with demand and is challenged with delays, particularly due to COVID-19 associated restrictions.  Good on our posties and all postal workers, we appreciate the work presently being carried out under extenuating circumstances.

As an ongoing frustrating problem and one that is tabled at the Traffic & Safety Advisory Committee (TSAC) Meetings, I am relieved to learn, along with our impacted residents, that Police will have new high-tech cameras, including an expanded fleet of drones to crackdown on hoons.  The new technology will add to the existing network of thousands of traffic cameras across the state.  The assault on hooning will make it much easier for police to catch hoons and to take strong action against them.  Police will have high-tech night vision capable cameras that can be deployed secretly, operated by an officer, or deployed on a drone.  I do believe that honing is an increasing problem for many areas.

These tough new tactics will complement the already harshest hoon penalties in the nation and will add to the arsenal of enforcement measures already being used by police to target hooning on Queensland’s roads:

Intelligence-driven enforcement with covert patrols; Monitoring of all forms of social media to take swift action; Hoon Hotline 13HOON; High-visibility patrols; Dedicated Road Policing officers; POLAIR aerial surveillance; Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology; Road safety camera trailers; Thousands of traffic cameras across the state and Police drone fleet.

The Electoral Commission of Queensland is making changes to prevent queues and allow for social distancing for the State Elections to be held in October. It is interesting to note that Queensland voters will be able to start voting from October 19, with about 200 early voting centres to be opened across the state. At the last election around 25% of Queenslanders lodged pre-poll votes and anther 700,000 voters chose to mail their votes, and more than a third didn’t turn up to polling booths on election day.

The NAB has reduced the opening hours of 114 of its smaller branches across Queensland. The Esk branch will be one of those affected and will now only open to customers from 9:30am to 12:30pm. No jobs will be lost as a result.

I would like to remind and invite our communities to complete the short survey that offers an opportunity to have a say on arts and culture in our region. The arts and cultural survey is being conducted through our Regional Arts Development Fund partnership and is open until 31 August. Information collected will help provide a framework necessary to support and nurture an environment in which arts and culture in the region can flourish.

I am pleased to report that the park bench which was painted red at Clock Park Lowood in support of the Red Rose Foundation’s Red Bench Initiative to raise awareness of domestic violence has received a great deal of support, so much in fact, other towns are seeking the same consideration. A plaque with the message “Change the Ending: Let’s Stop Domestic Violence” was installed on the red bench.

Many thanks to our staff for organising the Somerset Seniors Concert Series held at Toogoolawah, Kilcoy, Moore and Fernvale. I have witnessed how much work is devoted to these events. Also, a vote of thanks to staff for organising the Blackbutt to Linville BVRT bike ride. A very enjoyable day spent on our very famous BVRT, with great company, a lovely lunch and talented entertainment. Many thanks also to Out There Cycling and the Linville Hotel.

 The Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements (the Bushfires Royal Commission) was due to conclude its hearings on 17 July. However, an extra block of hearings will be now be held, starting on 3 August.  The final report was due to be handed down on 31 August. The Bushfires Royal Commission has been extended by two months, taking its reporting deadline to 28 October 2020. Inquiry chairman Air Chief Marshall Mark Binskin said COVID-19 had disrupted its schedule and made it difficult for stakeholders to make their submissions on time.

• Congratulations to Kathy Ellem Artist for winning the Best of Show in the 50^th National Exhibition for the Women Artists of the West at the Settlers West Gallery Tucson AZ 2020.
• Congratulations to Lowood High School for the initiative of training Jackson a rescue dog into a therapy dog, which has assisted students and staff at the school. Jackson has a calming effect on everyone and is the first accredited school therapy dog in the metro region and has been an ambassador for the school in promoting his work.
• Congratulations to Brodie Hurley for winning the ALPA Queensland Young Auctioneers Competition.

The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail just keeps getting busier and busier, with two camels pulling up at Toogoolawah earlier this week.

From all accounts Salubrious Inc. held at Mt Archer, Neurum on 1^st August was a complete success and due to COVID restrictions only 500 people were allowed at any one time at the event.

Many Kilcoy residents have offered their sincere thanks for the resurfaced track at Yowie Park.  One very delighted resident said “It was a very welcome surprise.  So good as it seemed to have a spring in it.  Thanks to the Council for keeping us oldies energized and eager to walk when we can.”

Lowood was definitely in the limelight this period, well done Lowood for such achievements.

A news article has provided information around the fact that fewer Queensland businesses are collapsing into liquidation or administration despite the economy facing its greatest shock in almost 100 years. Australian companies that have been impacted from April to June was significantly lower than the same time last year. It is suggested that the government’s JobKeeper program, changes to insolvency laws and banks’ repayment deferrals have allowed businesses to stay open. The lift in confidence and conditions has provided an increase in trading, profitability and employment over the period. However, business is nowhere near back to normal as survey indicators in level terms reveal. There is still some way to go. Two tiers of JobKeeper payments will be created to keep the $70bn program pumping money into the economy until the end of March, as new data revealed up to 240,000 businesses were at “high risk” of collapsing when the support ends.

It was reported yesterday that the multibillion-dollar deal to transform Brisbane and the southeast has been kicked into limbo despite other cities being on track to get their cash. The SEQ CityDeal was supposed to take the politics out of major infrastructure planning and funding but has instead fallen victim to a combination of COVID-19 and the electoral cycle, stakeholders say. The southeast’s mayors through the Council of Mayors developed the priorities for infrastructure funding and was expected this month but that timeline has been abandoned. It has been described as a “cruel blow” for economic hopes.

The driver of the garbage truck was spotted picking up every bit of rubbish which was lying on the street and put it back in the bin, before lifting the bin with his machine to empty it into the truck. Many residents praised the effort of the employee which falls well beyond his job description. The community acknowledged their appreciation of this extraordinary effort.

A supply shortage and demand boom has led to six-month delays on push bike shipments, meaning empty shelves could be a common sight until the end of this year. And as for the number of people using the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, I can definitely notice the increase in patronage in every town in our region. From personal experience individual cyclists and families are enjoying their adventure. At a recent ride from Blackbutt to Yarraman, I passed many families and push bike riders having a really great ride. There are around 19 gates between the two towns, and as a horse rider it was very appreciated when cyclists offered to open and close gates. I certainly welcomed the comradery.

I read with interest a report titled Public Libraries as generators of community value and economic activity. The report found that the benefits generated by public libraries are at least double their costs. The report included direct benefits to users and non-users, and the support of economic activity in their local economies. Public libraries also act as an important safety net for disadvantaged and marginalised community members, promoting social equity as well as economic efficiency.

On 3rd July, Kilcoy lost one of its legends, with the passing of Mr Kenneth Joseph Kuhn. At the age of 20 years (1942) Mr Kuhn enlisted into the Air Forces. He returned to Australia in 1946 and was discharged from the Services soon after. Ken met Iris McKay, and the couple were married in 1951 and who later moved to Kilcoy to run their own dairy farm. Money was very hard to come by, however they were successful in life working hard to make ends meet and to provide for their family of five children. Ken was always a very active member in the Kilcoy community. He was a real storyteller and very proud of his family and his life accomplishments. Ken would have celebrated his 98th birthday on 5th November. Rest in Peace Ken, I will miss your stoic and patriotic presence at our community events.

Tourism and businesses in our region have benefited from increased visitation to our towns and the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (BVRT) over the past few weeks. Car groups, families, walking groups, horse riders, bicycle riders and foodies are enjoying our region. One local accommodation business informed me that a group of walkers stayed overnight as part of their BVRT experience. The group normally fly overseas yearly to complete a walk, this year they stayed in their own country and even their own state to enjoy their hobby.

Queensland is a major exporter of almost one million tonnes of recyclables, and more than any other state except for Victoria.
