I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Ms Carmel Rohl of Kilcoy for not only completing the ten-kilometer Road Race of the Australian Masters Games 2017, which was held in Tasmania from 21-28 October, but for obtaining the gold medal for the 65-69 years age group. Well done Carmel! I have trained alongside of Carmel and her dedication and commitment to her sport is commendable, she is truly a motivational person.

Kilcoy Sports Centre – Youth Friday & Gym with Deb Frecklington MP
This centre just keeps pumping along, with a diverse range of services offered through this local community facility. Deb Frecklington (MP) was invited to join in with an exercise class with fitness instructor Wendy Smith. I attended the Kilcoy Youth Friday, and soaked up the enthusiasm of not only the youth attending the evening, but also of the volunteers who provided background music and healthy snacks. The event is an evening filled with fun and a safe environment to hang out with your friends.
Minds on Canvas – Kilcoy Courthouse Gallery
I was asked to be one of the five judges to award a first place in each of the Under 18’s and Adult section of the Minds on Canvas Exhibition. I congratulate both winners, and it was gratifying to acknowledge that over fifty entries were received for this very endearing competition. The adult winning entry was also judged as popular people’s choice.
Brisbane Valley Protein Garden Opening
I enjoyed visiting the Brown property and taking part in planting some healthy herbs, fruit trees and other useful plants. This community garden will benefit lots of neighbours who appreciate the paddock to plate lifestyle. Congratulations to the Brown family for such innovation, and providing a real neighbourhood environment.
Annual Awards Night – Toogoolawah & Lowood High School
I thoroughly enjoy being part of these truly wonderful events, whereby students of our solid and leading local state schools are recognised and congratulated for their tireless commitment to their final schooling years. Our youth are our future, and I feel confident in our future after learning of and witnessing our students’ growing mindset.
Local Councils commit to Digital usage
Local councils in Queensland have made big improvements to the way they manage the huge amount of information they collect and are looking for new opportunities to use data to improve their businesses, according to a comprehensive report. The report also found that an overwhelming majority of councils regularly used social media to engage with their communities, while more than a quarter were using drone technology to manage assets. A survey of Queensland councils as part of the report found that most councils are in favour of an ‘open data’ environment where they would share their data with the wider community to help find new ways to meet business and economic challenges. Only 55 percent of councils reported their community having access to high quality internet in their local areas; up only eight percent (from 47 percent) when first surveyed in 2013.
LGAQ Annual Conference
I appreciate the opportunity to attend the 121st Annual Conference of the LGAQ. I find that these conferences are an important communication pathway for Councillors to debate matters of importance on behalf of its communities. I also enjoy the benefits of networking with fellow Councillors who share similar experiences and can provide suggested solutions to various matters. It is extremely interesting to learn of and attempt to understand the mindset of different Local Authorities.
