Cr Cheryl Gaedtke – Ordinary Council Meeting 12 April 2023

Agenda Item #5 Matters of Public Interest

I encourage our residents to ensure that they are receiving a copy of  Council’s Welcome to SomArtset quarterly e-newsletter which promotes, encourages, and supports an artistic and vibrant Somerset Region.  The publication will tell you about what’s happening in arts and culture locally and further afield, profile community groups, and let you know about exciting arts and cultural opportunities on offer.

Congratulations to woodchopping Mother and Daughter team, Renee and Millee Retschlag competing in the same championship chop (275mm ladies’ underhand championship) and further congratulations to Renee Retschlag and partner coming third in the Jill and Jill double handed 375mm cross cut championship at the Sydney Royal Easter Show 2023.

Somerset Dam General Store held a very successful Easter Twilight Markets, so congratulations go to the new owners of this idyllic location.  I am sure this will be the first of many future community events.

Another wonderful Mad Hatters Tea Party was held at Lowood with a great community response and the event was blessed by beautiful weather.  Well done to Council staff who have worked effortlessly to provide this popular yearly event.

Kilcoy Chamber of Commerce held a collaboration – working together discussion at its Business at Dusk event held at the Exchange Hotel.  The workshop was well supported and the event provided an opportunity for businesses to network and to learn more about each other.  Businesses were eager to learn if it would ever be possible for Kilcoy to be on the rail trail path either from the Brisbane Valley Rail Trial or the Wamuran/Woodford Rail

Thank you SRC and CEO Andrew. This unthinkable situation must be improved for Kilcoy and the travelling public!⛔️Council condemns bridge inspection delays, calls for urgent policy overhaul⛔️Council has slammed Transport and Main Roads Queensland for delaying the reopening of a major highway bridge for more than 24 hours after floodwaters had receded.Kilcoy Creek Bridge on the D’Aguilar Highway was inundated with slow-moving floodwaters at 9pm on Monday, 16 December, yet remained closed until 7.10am on Wednesday, 18 December—despite being cleared of water by 6.30am on Tuesday.Council Chief Executive Officer Andrew Johnson said the delay was unacceptable and had caused unnecessary disruption and risk to our community. “Leaving the bridge closed under traffic control and police guard for more than 24 hours is an outrageous waste of taxpayer dollars,” he said. Totally unacceptable what transpired in Kilcoy! DTMR need to explain why their structure, when inundated by flood water must be inspected by an engineer before the newly replaced bridge can be reopened to the public. DTMR must be accountable to offering (past) assurances that this mandatory process would no longer apply to the new improved structure. The integrity of the previous wooden structure had to be inspected by an engineer prior to reopening to the public, we understood that need. We, the Kilcoy community and the travelling public need an explanation why this process is still valid, and what will occur with future flooding events in Kilcoy? The "road closed" route - Winya Road, Mt Kilcoy Road and Kennedy Street is not desirable. The clock monument roundabout is a challenge for long vehicles to negotiate, and not to mention all the residents impacted by this decision. The fact that all affected traffic travel over Walsh's Crossing and the council bridge that has the same flood waters flow beneath it beggars belief. There was community antagonism at the time of the DTMR bridge replacement, and unfortunately this issue was part of the resistance.Enough is enough. ...
